In truth, Sam had no idea what he was doing. He had to save his futureâand Ianâsâby winning a race with a fugitive woman and a ghost in the car. On the positive side, heâd developed a kind of zen mastery around weirdness.
Marigold was sitting behind him. He could feel her tickling the back of his neck just to annoy him. Go away, go away.
âWhoâs the pretty doll?â Marigold cooed. âIs she the girl next door who caught your fancy?â
Despite himself, Sam glanced sideways at Haley, who was staring out the window at the passing farmland. Her long hair was the same red as the turning leaves and her skin a cream that made his mouth water. Maybe it was the association of Haley with the breakfast sheâd served, but words like delicious and devour kept invading this thoughts.
Unfortunately, that was likely the last thing she wanted from him. Go away, go away.
Marigold gave up tickling and kissed his ear. It was like someone dabbing an ice cube against the side of his head. âYou can ignore me all you like, but Iâm your fairy godmother, remember? Iâll make sure you get what you wantââ She kissed him again. ââif you do the same for me.â
Horrified, Sam gripped the steering wheel until his knuckles turned white. He wasnât sure which was worse. What could a dead flapper possibly want? What did he want?
âIs it cold in here?â Haley asked, pulling on her jacket.
âItâs an old car,â Sam replied dryly. âItâs riddled with drafts.â
Marigold gave a rude snort and lit a cigarette. âSpeak for yourself, sweetheart. Youâre going to want to turn right at the next crossroad.â
âTake a right ahead,â said Haley, unaware that she was repeating the specterâs directions.
Sam obediently turned and then slowed as they reached a narrow drive. Theyâd reached the first timing point. Moonshell Bay lay in the distance, sparkling in the sun. âWe get a rest stop here. An hour to eat something and refuel.â
They waved as Esmerelda rolled past the timing station. The marshalsâtwo men he knew from car shows and museum eventsâheld up the stopwatch and gave them a positive thumbs-up. Sam patted the dashboard. Theyâd made up the time it had taken to collect Haley with no trouble at all. Better still, there had been no marshals along the route to catch him speeding to make up time. That might have knocked them down a point or two, but it had been a risk heâd been willing to take.
He parked and went to chat with the rally officials while Haley disappeared through the screen door of the old gas station. Ignored, Marigold blinked out of sight.
Once he was done chatting, Sam wandered around the outside of the station. Although he could hear vehicles passing in the distance, the whoosh of motors was faint. Birds chattered and the distant murmur of a radio came from the office. The warm scent of freshly turned farmland clung to the breeze. Sam took a deep breath, rolling his shoulders to ease the ache of handling the old car for hours on end.
